Specifically, damage to the tiny hair cells in your cochlea, known as stereocilia. Once these hair cells are damaged, either by the aging process or another cause, the damage is permanent. Sometimes damage to the auditory nerve can cause sensorineural hearing loss as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are many causes of sensorineural hearing loss, aging is one of the most common. Other causes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Illness<\/li><li>Certain drugs or medications<\/li><li>Genetic factors<\/li><li>A blow to the head<\/li><li>Exposure to loud noise<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2>Treatment Options<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect you are experiencing sensorineural hearing loss, it\u2019s important to make an appointment right away to see an audiologist. They can<a href=\"https:\/\/prescottent.com\/hearing\/hearing-loss\/hearing-tests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> conduct a series of hearing tests<\/a> to help determine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>How your ears respond to loud sounds<\/li><li>The quietest sound you can hear at different pitches<\/li><li>How well you can hear speech<\/li><li>The movement capacity of your eardrum<\/li><li>The type of hearing loss you have<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do have hearing loss, your audiologist will likely recommend hearing aids. You and your audiologist will work together to figure out what your individual hearing needs are.
