The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders reports that one in eight people in the United States ages 12 and older has hearing loss in both ears based on standard hearing examinations. If you’re one of this population and you wear hearing aids, we have some tips for you to help you make the most of this summer.
When Going Swimming…
If you want to take a refreshing dip in a pool or Goldwater Lake, be sure to take your hearing aids out first and store them somewhere safe, like in a case placed inside a backpack. You should do this if you approach any water, even if you’re not planning to go in, in case you get splashed.
If you’re making a trek to the beach, be sure to store your devices somewhere safe to prevent sand granules from infiltrating the device and causing damage.
When Going Hiking…
Moisture doesn’t just come from pools in the summer; it can also come from sweat. If you’re planning a hike and tend to get a little sweaty, you can purchase a protective sleeve for your hearing aids to keep moisture off. You can also invest in a dehumidifier to store your devices in at night to remove excess moisture.
If you’re worried about losing your devices on the trail – whether in brush where they’re likely to never be seen again or on the path where they could get stepped on – purchase a hearing aid lanyard that clips your devices to your clothes. This way, if they fall out, they’ll still be attached to you.
When Going Riding…
If you enjoy riding dirt bikes, quads or horses, or any other activity where you’re exposed to dust, be sure to take extra care cleaning your devices after. Just like moisture, dust can infiltrate your devices and cause damage.
When Applying Aerosols…
No matter what your preferred summer activity is, you should wear sunscreen and, in many cases, bug spray. But when applying these aerosols, you should take care to remove your devices first, as the chemicals in these products can create buildup and clog your microphone.
